Optimization

The Shuhai Wenyuan Digital Database and Interactive Internet Worktable has been designed to work on all computers.

Chinese Font

You will have to have a Chinese font on your computer. If you don't have one already, it is no trouble to install, is free, and takes up very little hard-drive space. If you are not sure whether you have a Chinese font installed, click
here. If you get Chinese characters, you are done. If you don't actually have a Chinese font, your computer may recognize the problem and ask prompt you to install--go ahead and do it. If you try to read a Chinese text on the site and get gibberish, install a font as follows:

If, like most people, you have a computer running Microsoft Windows, download and install Microsoft Global IME software by clicking here. Again, this is relatively easy and will not overload your hard-drive. (You may notice that the Microsoft page that you click to is dated 1999--neverthless, it is up-to-date.) You may also want to refer to Robert Eng's page on installing and using Chinese in Windows.

If you are one of the proud minority using a Macintosh computer, determine first which operating system you are using. If you are using System 7.1 to 8.6, click
here for instructions (this is a great site sponsored by the Council on East Asian Studies at Yale University). If you are using OS X, click here for instructions (same site as above).

Advanced Optimization

The Worktable achieves its innovative efficiency by mimicking a scholar's desk, where one may have several texts open and accessible simultaneously. In digital form with hyperlinks connecting texts, this format can increase one's rate of research by a significant degree.

To get the most of the Worktable, we suggest that you configure your monitor and browser as follows (though this is not necessary for basic functionality):

• Update your browser to the latest version.

Internet Explorer for Windows (this is a FAQ page but the easiest way to get the download)
Internet Explorer for Mac
Safari for Mac
Netscape Navigator for Windows
Netscape Navigator for Mac

• Reduce the size of all words as much as is comfortable by setting your monitor resolution to an adequately high level, e.g. 1024 x 768:

Windows: Start>>Settings>>Display>>Settings>>Screen Area>>[slide bar to desired setting]>>Okay [or] Apply>>Yes
Mac OS 9 and earlier: Apple icon>>Control Panels>>Monitors>>Resolution>>[click on desired setting].

Mac OS X: Apple icon>>System Preferences>>Displays>>[click on desired setting]

• Increase the capacity of the browser window by collapsing the toolbars at top:

Internet Explorer for Windows: View>>Toolbars>>[uncheck as desired].
Internet Explorer for Mac: click the button near the top left of the window.
Safari for Mac: click the button near the top left of the window.
Netscape Navigator for Windows: View>>Show/Hide>>[uncheck as desired].
Netscape Navigator for Mac: View>>Show/Hide>>[uncheck as desired]
.

• Adjust font size for legibility:

Internet Explorer for Windows: View>>Text Size>>[choose desired setting].
Internet Explorer for Mac: Edit>>Language/Fonts>>Font and Size>>Size>>[choose desired setting].
Safari for Mac: Safari>>Preferences...>>Appearance>>[choose desired setting].
Netscape Navigator for Windows: Edit>>Preferences>>Appearance>>Font>>[choose desired setting].
Netscape Navigator for Mac: View>>Text Zoom>>[adjust as desired].
