The purpose of this assignment in our survey of Asian History is to familiarize you with Chinese characters, Chinese texts and the ways in which the texts communicate Chinese values, especially as they relate to the cultivation of the person. In particular, we are interested in the definition of de2, character, virtue, power.

Take the following steps to complete this assignment [becauseShuhai Wenyuan is transitioning to a major revision at the time of this writing, this assignment may not exactly corespond to current features of the site.]:

1. Go to http://www.shuhai.hawaii.edu/

2. Login.

3. On left hand side, moving down the page, go to third section/box/ Enter Chinese Terms.

4. Click Search Books.

5. Select all books.

6. Click Save.

7. Above Search Books, you will find Search Tips.

8. Select Pinyin in pull-down menu.

9. Go to Lexicon, moving across the page, left to right, from box to box; select letter d.

10. Go to next box on right; click Pinyin, to find de2.

11. Go to Character Box and select corresponding Chinese character for de2 (see character listing on other side of this hand-out).

12. Go to Enter Chinese Terms, your Chinese character will appear in this box.

13. Click Search.

14. Click either Lexicon Box.

15. Looking to right-hand column, you will find a list of all cites relating to this term in the books you selected earlier, e.g. 001 ¤j¾Ç (Da Xue) Text New Window

16. Click hyperlink. In upper right hand box, you will see the Chinese text.

17. Go to upper left hand box, select text corresponding to Chinese Da Xue.

18. Moving to the right, select Legge edition; moving to the right, select Section CTextD and explore, to answer questions.

19. Analysis, answer the following:

a. Provide definition of character, virtue, power according to Classical Chinese Lexicon, found in the middle box, on right-hand side.
