Testimonials
It was a happy day when I found the Shuhai Wenyuan site.
This is a very valuable site for students of Classical Chinese. Thank you for your
valuable contribution to the Internet, and especially to Dr. Pulleyblank for his
generously making his book available over the Web. Naturally I have a paper copy
like any student of Classical Chinese, but having it online means I can now answer
my grammar quandries everywhere there's a phone line or a T1.

Shuhai is a useful interactive site for translating important
Chinese texts. It is not a "gimme" site, but requires users to think through
various definitions used in a variety of contexts.

I am very enthusiastic about having this website available for
my institution and its thirty-four associate institutions in the university System
of georgia, most of which cannot afford the luxury of a full Chinese program. Having
a web workstation replete with all of the critical Chinese philosophical texts through
the Han, dictionaries, a grammar, philological reconstructions of pronunciations,
public domain translations, and an extensive glossary of key philosohical terms assists
my efforts in Georgia and the Southeast to provide some understanding to students
and faculty members of the past and future importance of China.

I welcome this project for a number of reasons. First, I teach the Chinese history
and Asian history courses at my university. Having access to such materials on-line
allows my students to delve more deeply into Chinese philosophy. Even though my courses
are not taught in Chinese, I do offer a short introduction into the language. The
on-line resources from the project prove useful there. Indeed, having access to them
aids both in terms of permitting students to access the materials on their own and
also in terms of putting together class lectures and discussions. Second, North Georgia
College & State University is a small, liberal arts institution. It is also a
military college. Although part of the University System of Georgia, North Georgia
does not offer Chinese language instruction, and its resources are very limited when
it comes to Chinese philosophy and language. For the most part, students have to
go elsewhere for materials. The result is that given the interest I am working to
generate for Asian studies at the university, especially my principal area of Chinese
studies, the kind of resource you are creating is a major benefit.

At Wright State University, our resources for Asian studies are quite limited. I
find such an internet-based worktable to be completely invaluable for exposing my
students to texts, compilations of terminology and dictionaries that they simply
could not otherwise receive.

I am extremely impressed with what you have been able to accomplish at this stage
of the project. The basic pedagogic premise of the project, which combines the study
of Chinese language with the study of Chinese philosophy, coincides well with my
own experience. I have no doubt that the website will be a boon to a great many professors
and institutions.
